Installing Windows in New Construction

Installing a window in a freshly framed opening is one of the more simple tasks in a construction project.

Most new construction windows have what is called a nailing fin. These are found on vinyl or aluminum clad windows. This nailing fin is either vinyl or metal and has nail holes every 4 to 6 inches and about 1 and 1/2 inches wide. Nailing fins take the place of brick moulding which can still be found on primed wooden windows.

Not only do these fins make installation easier, but also make a better seal against water and air infiltration. These windows can be flashed if desired but not deemed necessary. A window that does not have the benefit of a soffit or porch roof above it may need flashing or a drip edge above it.

When getting ready to install a window, make sure the sheathing is not hanging into the rough opening. This could cut down the size of the opening and not let the window go into the opening. Once this is done, measure the rough opening to make sure the it is big enough for the window. You don’t want to lift a heavy window to an opening only to find it won’t fit. Rough openings are usually 1″ wider and 1/2″ taller than the window unit. Rough openings are spect and provided by the window manufacturer.

Depending on the size of the window, you’ll need 2 or 3 people to install a window. One or two outside and one inside.

Once you know the window fits, lift it to the opening from the outside. Set it on the sill and push it into the opening until the nail fins hit the wall. Make sure none of the fins folded themselves back into the opening especially the bottom one. The person on the inside then centers the window in the opening. Then using a level, checks it for plumb and level, and applies shims where needed. You may also want to check the window for square, although a window that’s closed and in the locked position usually is. The window can now be nailed in. My preference is roofing nails but 8d nails or cap nails will do the job.

If it is a standard jamb (4 9/16) another thing to check is how far it runs past the rough framing. This should be 1/2 inch. You’ll also want to make sure the window operates properly. Double hungs should slide up and down easily and casements should crank in and out without hanging up.

Cutting waste and cutting costs: How the construction industry is cleaning up to save money

With the UK housing market at an all-time low, it is not surprising that the construction industry is at the forefront of reform when it comes to adapting to a harsher economic climate. However, with the introduction of a government scheme a year ago and the arrival of numerous independent programmes, the industry is not merely cutting back on
power tools spend and streamlining its workforce to meet its goals – instead, it is moving down a much greener path.For most of us, the recession seemed to really come to fruition in the latter half of 2008 as we saw stocks fall by 30 percent across the globe and numerous high profile buy-outs. Somewhat conveniently, the UK government had established money-saving site waste management plans (SWMPs) back in April.

The SWMPs were made compulsory for construction projects that were over £300,000 in order to keep track of the amount and type of waste produced and whether it is disposed of in landfills – or if it is recycled or reused instead. Their importance is highlighted by research carried out by the NetRegs partnership which found (amongst other things) that the average cost of what is thrown away in one skip amounts to £1,200, and that 13 percent of what is delivered to a site will be thrown away instead of being used.

But it is not just large scale construction operations who are benefiting from site waste management plans. Private company, Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), was established in 2000 to help small, medium and large construction projects to reduce their waste and recycle more. Following the government’s moves to make SWMPs compulsory in April 2008, WRAP launched a new three year plan which aims to divert eight million tonnes of waste from landfill, to cut five million tonnes of CO2 emissions – and to benefit individuals, businesses and local authorities by over one billion pounds.

Similarly, Envirowise offer free support services to businesses by making them more resource efficient. Established in 1994, the company highlights the great cost (four percent of turnover) of inefficient resource use to businesses and aims to reduce waste. Such methods as establishing partnerships with suppliers have been proven to offer economical and environmental benefit to the whole of the industry, including businesses at the supply end of the construction change, as well as those at the end.

How To Implement Efficient Construction Dust Control

With the problem of nuisance dust growing across the nation, construction dust control has become a requirement by most states. It is because of this requirement that a construction dust control plan must be drawn up and implemented on practically every construction site that is larger than 1/2 acre.

The components that this plan has to include are any receptors that are sensitive to vegetation and water that are within 1,000 feet of the site. A map should be made of these receptors and submitted to the local health authority for review which often times includes their approval.

For a construction dust control plan to work effectively it must contain a way to monitor the dust problem. It should also include methods of minimizing or reduce the visible dust. It is recommended that visibly dry soil that has been disturbed, including unpaved roads, should be wetted down with water at least three times a day. This activity does not have to be done on non-business days or when sufficient rainfall to make the top soil not prone to making dust.

The plan should also include measures to handle wind situations. The direction of the wind should be monitored and recorded so downwind areas can be checked for evidence of dust.

In some areas, a third party consultant has to be employed to verify that the monitoring and proper precautions are taken to reduce visible dust. This third party should also have the ability to halt operations until the risk of producing excessive nuisance dust is reduced.

The use of dust control devices is recommended where applicable. This would include, but is not limited to, windbreaks, plastic tarps, and a tree line or shrubs.

The last requirement of a typical construction dust control plan is to control the speed of vehicles over the unpaved landscape. This is the biggest factor in reducing nuisance dust.

Construction Site Accidents Caused by Unsafe Working Conditions

Unsafe working conditions continue to plague some construction sites, both locally and internationally, according to many news reports. Though several websites exist that offer construction accident information, construction accidents continue to occur frequently. Many times, these unsafe conditions can be easily remedied by a competent foreman on the job site. Sadly, there is a certain stigma against safety on some construction sites. Safety is often overlooked or it is thought that engaging in dangerous construction site behaviors is overtly masculine. Others believe that safety is a cost that can be cut to save money on job projects. This specific belief that money can be saved by ignoring building code safety requirements or using sub-par building materials has been the cause of two recently reported construction-related issues.

The first has been the widely reported problem of defective Chinese drywall present in recently constructed homes across the U.S. It has come to the attention of several homeowners that their homes may be contaminated with defective Chinese drywall imported between 2000 – 2007, which may now be releasing harmful gases into their homes. This gas has been shown to corrode copper wiring in electrical sockets, copper duct work in air conditioning units, and tarnishing silver flatware. Additionally, it may present health concerns both from short term and long term exposure; many individuals have already experienced a litany of symptoms, including respiratory problems, headaches, and fatigue.

The contaminated building product has gone beyond creating unsafe working conditions for the construction workers that may have been exposed to the toxic Chinese drywall; it has now created a potentially hazardous living environment for many of the homeowners in which this defective product was installed.

The world was shocked to hear of another tragic construction accident in Shanghai. A 13 story apartment building collapsed almost completely intact, killing one worker. The collapse was apparently caused by workers beginning excavation on the underground parking garage, causing the river bank nearby to collapse and triggering a foundation failure for the complex. Preliminary reports have said that the Chinese government is holding 9 individuals connected with the building’s construction. This tragic accident shows us what happens when costs are cut on building code safety regulations.

Those in charge of the building should be the ones in charge of enforcing safety standards on the projects. The construction worker is often the victim of oversight when safety concerns are ignored. Fewer Construction Jobs Lead Fewer Construction Accident Deaths

A decrease in consumer spending on homes has led to a reduction in demand for new construction projects. Contractors, once overwhelmed with demands for new homes and developments of suburbs, now struggle to find buyers or tenants for empty homes, hoping for any source of income after their work. Skilled construction workers and artisan laborers find little work where there used to be a a wide selection of projects and jobs on which to work. Real estate and home prices have all taken a hit in this tough economic climate. Once the favored investment, these no longer hold the draw they held in years past. Though the market is good for those interested in buying, few people have been courageous enough to take this risk.

Though there have been fewer projects for construction crews, there may be a silver lining for some in the midst of the storm. On August 20, Bloomberg news reported that deaths in the workplace fell to their lowest levels in 16 years, down 10 percent in 2008. This is most likely a correlation with the decline in dangerous jobs available in fields such as commercial construction. Indeed, while deaths for construction workers dropped 20 percent from 2007, spending on construction projects fell 5 percent. According to the report, transportation accidents were still responsible for the highest number of work-related deaths.

Though construction accident deaths fell in 2008, workers should still be aware of potential safety hazards on the job site. There have still been many high profile construction accident fatalities over the past few months. Most recently, a man fell to his death in Branson, Missouri while working on a construction tank at an ethanol plant. Another worker fell to his death while testing a potentially incorrectly assembled scaffolding in Brooklyn, New York. According to a New York Times report, the scaffolding fell when a section of rope disconnected from a the fifth story wall. The worker fell to a first floor terrace and died.

It is often the case that construction accidents can be prevented by simple oversight and a conscientious commitment to safety by all workers on the job site. The tragic reality, however, is that safety is often not the primary concern of the workers or those in charge. Time constraints, deadlines, and a casual attitude often are contributing factors to preventable construction accidents. Workers who observe potentially hazardous conditions on any job sites which they are currently working should notify their foreman or job site supervisor in addition to any extra precautions. Vigilance regarding safety, especially in a dangerous profession such as construction, is its own reward.

Negligence to Blame for International Construction Accident

Official government reports released this week by an appointed spokesperson announced cost cutting measures and disregard for many construction standards and safety protocols were responsible for a recent fatal construction accident involving the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The company is responsible for oversight, design, and construction of the New Delhi Railway and is pushing to have construction completed in anticipation of the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The company recently experienced the worst construction accident in its history on July 12, 2009, when a bridge support collapsed killing five construction workers.

The official report, announced by Saugata Roy, minister of state in India’s Ministry of Urban Development, revealed that in order to save money on the project, the construction company contracted to perform the work was also given the task of designing parts of the bridge. This presents not only a conflict of skills, but a conflict of interest; the construction company has it in their best interest to save as much money as possible on materials and construction. The construction company in question, Gammon India Ltd, maintains that costs were not cut and that all safety standards were followed to the letter. The question of the legitimacy of this claim is up for debate, however. During the first phase of construction for the Delhi Metro, the design was performed by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and its consultants while construction was carried out by separate contractors. However, during the second phase the duties of construction and design were combined, creating a possibility for a serious construction site accident.

The initial construction site accident occurred on July 12, when a section of railbed bridge collapsed, killing 6 total workers and injuring approximately 15. This accident followed the October 2008 construction accident in which a crane placing concrete slabs collapsed killing two and injuring 30 others. Opinions differ on the true cause of these construction accidents; negligence and cost cutting measures have been officially announced, though there are some who say that these factors are part of a larger problem of rushing the work in the first place. In anticipation of the the 2010 Commonwealth Games, scheduled to be held in New Delhi beginning October 3rd, 2010, the government is pushing the metro project with haste. This will be the largest multi-sport event conducted to date in Delhi and India, and the municipal government wants to present a modern transit system to the world’s visitors as they arrive and travel throughout the city.

However, despite all the pressure and money funneled into the project, progress is not being made as fast as the city would like. With setbacks such as these fatal construction accidents and the looming possibility of several construction accident lawsuits, completion of construction is on a tight timeline. It is almost certain that there will be legal action against Gammon India Ltd., as family members have likely contacted a construction accident lawyer.
